How is Nassau different from Suffolk?
Nassau assesses property county-wide. Challenges go through the Assessment Review Commission, a single administrative body, on one county-wide calendar — unlike Suffolk, where ten separate towns each run their own process. If you have moved between the counties, the process you remember does not apply.
The practical consequence is that a Nassau homeowner files with ARC rather than with a town board, and follows a county-wide deadline rather than a town-specific Grievance Day.
For owner-occupied one-, two- and three-family homes, Small Claims Assessment Review is generally available after the initial administrative review in both counties — it is a state-level process that works similarly either side of the county line, even though reaching it starts from a different door.
